Instead, make them have a specific reason to band together that's not just to be educated in their powers. No cocky kids who need to be taught to control their powers. Give your characters real lives--real concerns. Does one have a wife and kids? Does another have bills to pay? A lot of superhero stories neglect the 'real life' aspect. Make your setting unique--not just Everywhere, USA. Pick a specific city with character--and tie your characters to that city.
