What is an enjoyable novel that an eighth grade boy can read for pleasure?
Q. I specifically like biographies, action, history, and wars. Maybe you can conbine it into a bigoraphy about a historical war figure in an action-packed war which should be an enjoyable novel for an eighth grade boy to read for pleasure. If not just find one that comes close to all four subjects. The only 2 things the book must be is an enjoyable novel for an eighth grade boy to read for pleasure.

How do I get my novel published and noticed?
Q. I've written a novel that I think is pretty good. How can I get my novel (and maybe other stories as well) published and noticed when I don't have a lot of money to pay a publisher and literary agent? Do I need to have money to get my work noticed?
Asked by Laura - Tue May 27 23:54:01 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. www.writersmarket.com has a list of publishers and literary agents that are reputable. If you get a good agent or publisher, you shouldn't have to pay anything. What happens is when your book gets published, they get a percentage of the profits. How much of a percentage they get is determined by your contract.

A. "The Portrait of a Lady" by Henry James is set, partially, in Rome. You'll recognize some of the sites that James describes. "Les Miserables" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" by Victor Hugo are both set in Paris, and the setting is very important to the plot of these novels.

A. Why are you bothered about your book being made into a movie? Very few books are made into movies to begin with (though many more books are optioned, meaning that whoever pays for the option has the right to make a movie based on the book). Are you worried the studio will ruin it? You retain the copyright when the book is published, so it's your decision as to whether to sell the movie rights. (Partly your decision, anyway - if the book is very successful, and/or the studio is offering a lot of money, your publisher and/or agent will put a lot of pressure on you to sell.) Look at books that have been adapted into films recently, and work out what they have in common. Then make your book not like that. Film is mainly a visual medium.… [cont.]

A. 1) Try situations that make people feel vulnerable. Isolation (like in misery), or a dead end situation with weather predicaments (like the shining) or imprisonment (like Saw). 2) Also try something that has to do with extreme knowledge or cunning the bad person has about your hero (it is scary to feel you are being watched and somebody know your habits and can foresee your reactions like sleeping enemy or what lies beneath where a husband is all potent due to intimacy). 3) life threatening or worse disability/impairment is a fear/insecurity most people have (the hostel, saw) 4) a deep psychological motive counts to reality (look at the Hand that rocks the cradle) and also note the fear of the wife of being misunderstood and losing the… [cont.]

A. George Wickham - A handsome, fortune-hunting militia officer. Wickham's good looks and charm attract Elizabeth initially, but Darcy's revelation about Wickham's disreputable past clues her in to his true nature and simultaneously draws her closer to Darcy. Wickham is an old acquaintance of Mr. Darcy, and an officer in the militia unit stationed near Meryton. A superficially charming man, he forms a friendship with Elizabeth Bennet, prompting many to remark upon his suitability as a potential husband. He spreads numerous tales about the wrongs Mr. Darcy has done to him, colouring the popular perception of the other man in local society; it is eventually revealed that these tales are distortions, and that Darcy was the more wronged man in… [cont.]

A. I did The Great Gatsby in 8th grade that was great. I was in accelerated english and english lit so I also did Tomorrow When the War Began by John Marsden (although that's Australian) and Looking For Alibrandi (also Australian). They were great books. Um, you could always do a Shakespeare play? Macbeth is a foolproof one, same with the Merchant of Venice and A Midsummer Nights Dream.

What is the science-fiction novel involving aliens who come back to Earth to fix what they destroyed?
Q. It is somewhat of a funny satire...Aliens accidentally destroy the world, and they come back many years later to try and fix things. The novel takes place in New Jersey (Jamesburg, I believe). At one point, the aliens make the main character "go to work" where all he does is combine paper-clips? Ring a bell, anyone? Thanks a lot.

How would the novel The outsiders might have been without Sodapop?
Q. What did Sodapop bring to the novel and how would the novel change without him.
Asked by Joss - Thu May 21 19:17:03 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sodapop is Ponyboy's older brother that he knows he can depend on and talk to. At the beginning of the book Ponyboy doesn't think Darry loves him, without Soda (who he does think loves him) It is quite likely in my opinion that Ponyboy probably would have run away before the events in the book. Sodapop is kinda like the "peace keeper" between Pony and Darry. Without him, in the end of the book the fights between Darry and Pony may have never stopped and the family could end up pretty torn up if you think about it. Really though, I think Soda was kind needed, or else the entire Curtis family would have just consisted of two brothers who didn't really get along and both not the most cheerful of people. In other words I think the Curtis… [cont.]

He was murdered by the Sons of Liberty in 1995 to create a distraction during the theft of the painting, The Two Georges. Shockingly, his murder was the fifth by gunfire in New Liverpool for the first half of the year." "Richard Nixon in "Hindsight" Richard Nixon's presidency was fictionalized nearly two decades before the Watergate break-in by Michelle Gordian. Nixon had already made a name for himself by 1953, so Gordian disguised him as "President Cavanaugh".
