Q. i need spark notes or cliff notes of some kind for the lords of discipline by pat conroy. a website that offers them would be nice or if someone has a really detailed description of what happens in the book that would work too. Please help soon!

A. I know this may sound like I'm lecturing you but...read the book. Pat Conroy is a master and deserves to be read word for word. It's not a long book and if you put your mind to it you could have it read in a day or two. Don't do the spark notes thing...you may learn something.

Conroy's style is a very highbrow, almost pretentious style of English which he uses to demonstrate the depth of his characters -- typically, that depth is surprising since the characters come from an impoverished or working class background. (Particularly in The Prince of Tides.) Consider the very first paragraph: "My wound is geography. It is also my anchorage, my port of call." Right away, he establishes a lofty, poetic style. He also does an amazing job of balancing abstraction and concreteness -- this opening paragraph is certainly abstract poetry, yet the entire book centers on the Wingo's coastal origins and southern background, which makes the first paragraph very concrete.

Conroy for Lundmark: did the Flames win that trade?
Q. I say hell yeah they did. Conroy had his best seasons in Calgary, and most importantly, he's happy to be back. Lundmark was a terrible underachiever. What do you think?

You may recognize him as author of the popular Beach Music, but I'd like to remind you of some other great titles like The Lords of Discipline, The Great Santini, The Water Is Wide, The Prince of Tides, and My Losing Season. His roots run deeply into the SC Low Country and the days of his young life at the Citadel in Charleston. Do you know him already? Care to discuss your favorite?

My family is from Charleston and I know that The Lords of Discipline was a hot topic for a while when it first came out. My family has been in Charleston for over three hundred years, so some of my relatives fit into the stereotypical south of broad group. Most old families in Charleston weren't too happy with their portrayal in the book. All in all, Conroy is an amazing author, although I wouldn't be so sure about his roots running too deep in the low country, after all his father was a yankee.
