Spy fiction, literature concerning the forms of espionage, was a sub-genre derived from the novel during the nineteenth century, which then evolved into a discrete genre before the First World War (1914–18), when governments established modern intelligence agencies in the early twentieth century. As a genre, spy fiction is thematically related to the novel of adventure (The Prisoner of Zenda, 1894, The Scarlet Pimpernel, 1905), the thriller (such as the works of Edgar Wallace) and the politico–military thriller (The Schirmer Inheritance, 1953, The Quiet American, 1955). HistoryIn nineteenth-century France, the Dreyfus Affair (1894–99) contributed much to public interest in espionage. For some twelve years (ca. 1894–1906), the Affair, which involved elements of international espionage, treason, and anti-Semitism, dominated French politics. The details were reported by the world press: an Imperial German penetration agent betraying to Germany the secrets of the General Staff of the French Army; the French counter-intelligence riposte of sending a charwoman to rifle the trash in the German Embassy in Paris, were news that inspired successful spy fiction. Q. Me and my dad have been trying to think of the title or author of a book we read years ago. It was historical fiction about a boy during the first world war who lived with his dad. His dad was a scientist working on whatever bomb (atomic or nuclear I can't remember) they were building in New Mexico. At the beginning of the book the boy's friend falls off a building and dies. The boy becomes friends with a kid who's parents are Russian spies... their attack dogs come after the boy at one point and there is a man who gets seriously injured from all the radiation and gives the boy a pair of sunglasses, telling him the bomb is "the sun" and he should stay as far away from it as he can. Anyone remember reading this book and can give me some… [cont.] Asked by GeekGirl - Mon Jan 8 01:31:57 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. You are definitely thinking of "The Gadget" by Paul Zindel, but it's WWII era, not WWI. The boy's name is Stephen, and the book opens with him and his cousin, Jackson, in London. They are up on the roof during a German air raid and Jackson dies when the roof caves in. Stephen goes to live with his father in Los Alamos, and there he befriends a boy named Alexei. Their fathers are both working on the bomb. Q. I'm trying to write a spy story, but I've gotten myself stuck. I haven't even started, but I have my two protagonists figured out. The only thing is that I need a reason as to WHY the bad guy is bad, and what the story should be about. I've written a fan fiction for Alex Rider, but writing an original one is proving to be a bit challenging. Any help I can get will be very appreciated. Thank you. There is a movie called Pickup on South Street (1953). It's about a spy who hunts a petty thief who has lifted microfilm from a woman's purse. In this movie the bad guy is only a little bad. But circumstances out of his control, lift him to new heights. Your bad guy could be like this. He may have inadvertently put himself on the wrong side of the law, gotten involved in a larger more dangerous situation and doesn't know how to get out. Does he then try to go straight? Or does he evolve into a bigger threat? This may take away the predictability that many spy novels have. You can go back and forth with his destiny. just trying to help...
