irony?????
Q. what is ironic about this quote and how is it ironic? "The body is first laid out in the undertaker's morgue- or rather, Mr. Jnes is reposing in teh preperation room."

A. Well it's like a really black kind of humour. Mr. Jones is dead and his body is laid out in the morgue, and they like say he's "reposing", and as he's dead he actually can't repose. Some people might find that funny.

What is the best method to recognize everyday irony?
Q. Irony is one of the hardest things for people to understand, or recognize, and often something is labeled ironic when it's not ironic at all. I have researched the subject of irony for a while, and I'm better at reconizing it when I see it than I was previously, but I feel there is so much irony out there that I fail to recognize as ironic. So many funny's lost. :( How do you recognize or create irony? Make it as simple as you can, like you're educating a 5 year old here. :) Thanks.

A. Use soliloquy in a Sentence 1. an utterance or discourse by a person who is talking to himself or herself or is disregardful of or oblivious to any hearers present (often used as a device in drama to disclose a character's innermost thoughts): Hamlet's soliloquy begins with To be or not to be. 2. the act of talking while or as if alone. === Romeo and Juliet made easier.

What is the difference between irony and coincidence?
Q. My English teacher told us today that "people commonly misuse the word 'irony'" and she was going to tell us how but got stopped by the bell. We're not going to have school till next Thursday, but I want to know before she tells us. Any suggestions?

A. Irony is an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected usually in a humorous fashion. In the song "Isn't it Ironic" all the things she mentions actually are not ironic. Just unfortunate incidents. But your teacher is probably meaning literary irony. That's something different. Definition for that is: a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated.

A. Twelfth Night, Or What You Will is a romantic comedy by William Shakespeare, believed written around 1601 as a Twelfth Night's entertainment for the close of the Christmas season. The subtitle is believed to be an afterthought, created after John Marston premiered a play titled What You Will during the course of the writing. The title Twelfth Night, or What You Will, prepares the audience for its jovial feel of festivities consisting of drink, dance, and giving in to general self-indulgence. The subtitle What You Will, implies that the audience is also involved in the merry spirit found in the play. The subtitle also refers to the wealthier characters who do little work and possess the liberty to do as they please, focuses on the… [cont.]

A. It's been a while since I read it, but off the top of my head I can think of two examples of irony: 1) everyone was led to believe it was a black man who raped some poor defenceless white girl, when actually she was a bit of a slut trying to seduce him, which contradicts the racial stereotypes set in the time, and 2) you're meant to think boo radley is some evil maniac through the whole book and in the end he's the one who saves scout and ends up being a really kind man. the climax i think would be the results of the trial and when the father of the girl tries to hurt scout, because everything after that is just tying up the loose ends after the climax, concluding the book. you have all the tension building in the story, then the tension… [cont.]

A. If I hadn't seen a friend for years and suddenly bumped into them and they had the same handbag as me, that would be a coincidence, but it wouldn't really be ironic. If we had been trying to get in contact with each other for ages, bought the handbag in the same shop but didn't see each other, that would be ironic. It's easy to use examples but it is quite difficult to explain either concept without them. Check out how the dictionary does it if you're really interested

What is the irony in Benjamin Franklin's opening statement?
Q. From Benjamin Franklin's "An Address to the Public" from the Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery, and the relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage... "It is with peculiar satisfaction we assure the friends of humanity, that, in prosecuting the design the design of our association, our endeavors have proved successful far beyond our most sanguine expectations." What is the irony in the statement? I think it is we tried so hard to suppress African Americans into slavery that we more successful in damaging their culture than we can actually acknowledge and see.
Asked by longhorn_4_life_2006 - Mon Jan 12 13:51:00 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I don't think you are right. Franklin was trying to abolish slavery, bringing together a group of people for that purpose. He wouldn't see the continuation of slavery or the suppression of African culture as 'success'. (Actually, I doubt whether anyone in those days, pro or anti slavery, gave a thought to African culture. As far as American and European whites were concerned, blacks were 'savages', who had no culture.) I think the irony is that the 'success' Franklin speaks of is not success in abolishing slavery but in bringing people together for that purpose. He says he's been successful 'in prosecuting the design of our association', which is a wonderful phrase like someone would have used in the 18th century, but what does it… [cont.]

A. Written in the mid-1590s, probably shortly before Shakespeare turned to Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night s Dream is one of his strangest and most delightful creations, and it marks a departure from his earlier works and from others of the English Renaissance. The play demonstrates both the extent of Shakespeare s learning and the expansiveness of his imagination. The range of references in the play is among its most extraordinary attributes: Shakespeare draws on sources as various as Greek mythology (Theseus, for instance, is loosely based on the Greek hero of the same name, and the play is peppered with references to Greek gods and goddesses); English country fairy lore (the character of Puck, or Robin Goodfellow, was a popular figure… [cont.]

When to use irony and when to use sarcasm?
Q. As I understand it,irony presents a word/ value and follows up by undercutting our expectations of the literal or expected meaning of the word/ value. Ex. of irony from Chaucer- the princess is charitable, she weeps when she sees an animal in pain. Doesn't irony mock the object of the irony? Or can irony be used in a non-mocking way? Is there less judgement in irony than in sarcasm?
Asked by gooddogtoy - Thu Nov 30 13:19:49 2006 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Well, you don't really "use" irony...It just happens. It's the result of a situation, not a manner of speaking. You use sarcasm, in the way that you speak. I don't see that your example is ironic or sarcastic. It sounds to me like the princess is a charitable person, who cries when she sees an animal in pain. Irony would be something like, "The princess cried when she saw the animal in pain, but was perfectly fine watching the criminal being hanged"...See how those two behaviors contradict each other? That's irony. Sarcasm would be like saying, "The princess cried when she saw the animal in pain", when in reality, she was laughing about it.
