How do comic book writers break into the industry?
Q. I'm currently a teen and eternally a writer, at this point writing fiction (short stories and novels), but at some point I'd like to write for comic books. Particularly, the big superhero comics. Yeah, I had to choose the ambitious route. So, how does one break into the industry? Also, is there any way to make the transition from traditional writing to comic book writing, say, if I wanted to start out my career doing novels and then move on to comic books?

How can a novice comic book artist start out on the right foot?
Q. I have just finished a 59 page black-and-white comic book and I have the printed pages sitting right next to me. As an up-and-coming comic book author, I would like to know what I should do with my comic. Would I be better off going to a print store and make Xeroxed copies to sell to people or submit some of those copies to small publishing companies?

A. if you're serious about breaking into the biz, try any local comic conventions! great place to meet folks, see speakers covering such topics, and even independent distributors. i've actually run into people who have had their books printed and or xeroxed, and handed them out and took donations. there are also many classes you can find, and many different aspects to the industry to partake in- artists, colorists, inkers,. editors, etc. you've pretty much hit the answer on the head yourself though... do it all!!! meow.

What size comic book sleeves for normal comics?
Q. My cousin wants some comic book sleeves and boards for his comic's. I keep seeing different sizes like silver age and gold age. What are the sizes for the new comics that are coming out now?
Asked by Matthew - Sun Apr 11 16:43:23 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The standard size of an American made comic book is 9.5 inches by 6.5 inches usually with a flap that can be secured. This is the size of all single issue DC and Marvel comics, as well as many others. Usually the odd size bags are made for Mangas or anthology issues.

What is the best comic book to draw figures from?
Q. My boyfriend is a great artist, and loves to draw figures out of comic books. Among his favorites are the Justice League, Spiderman, Superman, etc. Pretty much the classics. However, he also enjoys the stories of them. I'm hoping to surprise him with a book for Valentines day, but want it to be something he will appreciate. Someone help me find the best combination between good story line and good figures to draw!

Books a aspiring comic book artist must get ?
Q. I'm an aspiring comic book artist who is hoping to create and get a new comic book published sometimes in the future, and was wondering what books should I get to help me? The theme of mine will be about an indian girl wanting to be like a hero of legend, even after finding out he was a fake. There will be allot of kick butting. Anyways any good art book suggestions ?

A. Most any art book will help you with your art, but for books about how to make a comic, you should get Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics, and Will Eisner's Comics & Sequential Art. Understanding Comics is not a teaching manual, but it's an in depth investigation into what a comic actually is, and how your mind processes information. It won't show you how to do anything, but it will open your mind and show you what can be done. I've heard of companies using it as mandatory reading for computer programmers and systems designers to get them to open their minds up. Will Eisner's Comics & Sequential Art is THE book on how to make comics. The language that comics use was basically created by Eisner. He certainly wasn't the first person… [cont.]

How do comic book artists draw soo many things ?
Q. How can comic book artists draw soo many different things ? So many different objects, poses, people, settings, ect. Is it all memorized things they learned in school or do they have to gather some reference pictures for each chapter ?
Asked by cancan - Thu Mar 12 14:55:55 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, it's just practice. Like drawing a dog. You don't always draw it from the side only, you visualize it in 3-D and can draw it from any angle and in any pose. Practice. And observation, and doodling, and then when you are putting it all down on the page if you do need a little help on a pose you check some reference pictures.

How many comic book stores are there in the United States?
Q. I am working on a project and I'm having troubles finding statistics on Comic Book Stores. I know I'm doing something wrong, just not sure what.
Asked by sillyshac - Wed Apr 26 01:29:55 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Like others said, this will be a very difficult statistic to find, and probably not something posted anywhere on the net directly. However, there is probably a way to find out. One company distributes all the comics in the United States, called Diamond Comics. They run a service called comic store locate service: This is a searchable list by city of nearly every comic book shop in the country. However, because of the volume, you can not see a straight out list. I would recommend calling their customer service, and asking them, because they are going to be the only people with any sort of clue: The number is: Phone: (410) 560-7100 Good luck, and if you do find out, please post.

A. The grid systems on Kodak are free and have test options for up to 12 photos. These are promotional sites tho, in general the idea of cartoons is a two step art approach. One select out the facial pieces and copy and save. Using the grid cut off the emblem pieces and save into another file, this is the fun set. Now using a phase out coloring keep in mind only one variable is heat. Hearts, hands, feet, knees, fat, or sweat areas may show heat effects. So lighten the area and make the color stronger on the heat, this is the live action comic book effect. Choose colors without yellow, blue or wood green-brown-aqua shades for cleaner photo aligment. Is there a Question comic book similar to Justice League version?
Q. I recently watched Justice League Unlimited and really liked The Question in the way the he is portrayed in that cartoon. I picked up some Question comics because of this, but found that this wasn't quite the same one that I liked. Can anyone recommend a comic book that uses either the same or at least a more similar version of the Question than found in the 80s stories?
Asked by Dave - Wed Jun 17 00:21:50 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The Justice League Unlimited version of the Question was more of a loner, dark, and conspiracy theorist. Although Rorschach was a homage to him, in JLU the Question is more like Rorschach. So unfortunately, this Question is only the JLU's product.

A. You're going to have real trouble with the first two "backing or great credit.", but all is not lost. Before you do anything, did you talk with Diamond yet. They are the distributor for all comics (you don't ever buy direct from Marvel, DC, Image and the others). Get the ball rolling with them, see what you need and what they are asking you to do. Second, did you get a business license yet? Do you have a partner or is it just you. Talk to somebody (other then on the Internet) to see if you need to get a LLC, Inc.. stuff like that. Did you write up a business plan yet? This one your need to learn how to do, but at least sit down and write all your thoughts down. Have you looked at any storefronts in your town? This is free so go out… [cont.]
